Dans les cordes de Safina

Dinara Safina fait figure de favorite pour le titre à l’US Open. Gare toutefois aux sœurs Williams et au retour de flamme d’Ana Ivanovic ou Jelena Jankovic.

Sharapova laisse un vide

«Rater ces deux événements me peine énormément, personne ne peut imaginer à quel point ça me fait mal». Forfait aux Jeux Olympiques puis à l’US Open en raison d’une blessure à l’épaule, Maria Sharapova ne cachait pas ses émotions début août. La Russe, partie depuis dans l’Arizona pour entamer une longue rééducation, suivra donc Flushing Meadows à la télévision comme elle a regardé avec attention les Jeux. Avec Justine Henin, tenante du titre, elle est la grande absente de la dernière levée du Grand Chelem de la saison. Qui peut donc être considérée comme la favorite ? Dinara Safina semble avoir le profil idéal pour enfin décrocher un Majeur dans sa carrière. Finaliste à Roland Garros puis aux JO, la petite sœur de Marat a toutes les cartes en mains pour rafler la mise. Sa perte de poids lui offre une nouvelle mobilité sur le court et son changement d’entraîneur lui ont fait le plus grand bien. Il lui faut, en tout cas, mettre de côté son complexe d’infériorité en finale pour espérer le trophée. A Big Apple, elle n’a jamais fait mieux qu’un quart de finale. C’était il y a deux ans.

Ivanovic s’est soignée en Australie

Si Safina crève l’écran depuis son passage à la Porte d’Auteuil, Ana Ivanovic est loin d’avoir confirmé. Le poids du statut de n°1 mondiale, qu’elle a récupéré en début de semaine, serait-il trop lourd à porter ? Oui, si l’on se fie à ses résultats depuis juin. Depuis son séjour parisien, la jolie Serbe n’a disputé que cinq petits matches et s’est inclinée à deux reprises. Pire, une blessure au pouce contractée à Montréal l’a empêchée de prendre part aux JO ! Heureusement pour elle, le tendon n’a pas été touché et elle a évité l’opération. Elle est toutefois partie se soigner en Australie avant d’arriver mardi à New York en compagnie de son médecin personnel, qui continue de lui faire suivre un traitement. Elle en aura peut-être besoin car le tirage au sort lui a réservé un mauvais tour d’emblée contre Vera Dushevina ! Comme à Wimbledon, elle portera le dossard de tête de série n°1, juste devant sa compatriote Jelena Jankovic. N°1 mondiale, son rêve d’enfance pendant une semaine, la Serbe a été sortie en quarts de finale à Pékin et doit lutter contre une blessure au mollet depuis un bon mois.

Dementieva sur sa lancée ?

Passée proche de la sortie la saison passée devant Alizé Cornet en 2007, Jankovic avait été stoppée en quarts par Venus Williams. Cette dernière, éliminée plus tard par Justine Henin, avait pratiqué un jeu très offensif qu’elle devra retrouver pour se frayer un chemin vers le sacre. Elle en a les moyens, au même titre que sa sœur Serena. Soufflant le chaud et le froid à Pékin, l’ancienne n°1 mondiale a coché le titre new-yorkais au tableau des objectifs de sa saison. Elena Dementieva n’a pas l’habitude de tirer de tels plans sur la comète mais ne pourra pas se cacher bien longtemps en cette fin d’année. Titrée à Pékin, la francophile adore le Decoturf et se rappelle qu’elle y avait atteint la finale il y a quatre ans. Ses progrès au service et sa lancée actuelle pourraient l’aider à faire mieux mais elle devra se méfier d’Akgul Amanmuradova pour son entrée en lice.

La Française Julie Coin, 25 ans, parfaite inconnue classée 188e mondiale, s'est forgée un nom avec son succès aussi sidérant qu'inattendu sur la Serbe Ana Ivanovic, N.1 mondiale (6-3, 4-6, 6-3).

Coin, habituée à l'ombre du circuit secondaire de la WTA, s'est retrouvée en pleine lumière en déboulonnant en deux heures une N.1 mondiale qui n'en avait que le nom dans le plus grand stade de tennis du monde avec ses 23.000 places. Elle, la sans grade issue des qualifications et qui disputait à New York son premier tournoi Grand Chelem, a rajouté une ligne aux livres de statistiques, discipline que cette diplômée de mathématiques d'une université américaine affectionne particulièrement. En effet, jamais une N.1 mondiale n'avait été battue par une joueuse aussi mal classée selon les statistiques de la WTA, qui démarrent en 1975. La dernière N.1 mondiale battue par une mal classée était... Ana Ivanovic, qui avait vécu la même mésaventure au 3e tour du dernier Wimbledon, battue en deux sets (6-1, 6-4) par la Chinoise Zheng Jie, 133e mondiale. Deux échecs retentissants, qui n'est plus la même depuis sa victoire à Roland-Garros.

Les têtes tombent
Svetlana Kuznetsova, tête de série no3 et finaliste à New York l'an dernier, a été éliminée vendredi au troisième tour de l'US Open par la Slovène Katarina Srebotnik (no28) 6-3 6-7 6-3.

Avec l'élimination de Kuznetsova et celle de la no1 mondiale Ana Ivanovic, jeudi, ce sont deux des trois premières têtes de série du tableau féminin qui sont déjà passées à la trappe à New York.

La Russe (23 ans), qui s'était inclinée devant Justine Henin l'année dernière en finale, n'a plus rien fait de probant depuis sa demi-finale de Roland-Garros, perdue contre sa compatriote Dinara Safina début juin.

Katarina Srebotnik (27 ans) atteint les 8e de finale d'un tournoi du Grand Chelem pour la troisième fois de sa carrière (deux fois à Roland-Garros). Elle rencontrera Patty Schnyder (no15)

LE TENNIS FEMININ SE CHERCHE UNE REINE

Le tennis féminin se cherche une nouvelle no1 mondiale à l'US Open après l'élimination d'Ana Ivanovic, alors que quatre jeunes femmes peuvent encore y prétendre, avec un petit avantage pour les Russes Elena Dementieva, facile qualifiée pour les 8e de finale vendredi, et Dinara Safina.

Ivanovic, sortie par la 188e mondiale jeudi, peut encore rester no1. Mais il faudrait pour cela un concours de circonstances incroyable: à savoir que ni Jelena Jankovic (no2) ni Serena Williams (no4) n'aillent en demi-finales et que ni Safina (no6) ni Dementieva (no5) n'aillent en finale. Au moins une de ces conditions a de grandes chances de se réaliser.

Pour Safina, la quête dépendra des autres. C'est pourtant elle que Kuznetsova sort du lot: "Ce que je sais, c'est que Safina a été mon adversaire la plus forte cet été", dit-elle. "Elle joue tellement bien en ce moment".

Le tennis féminin est en tout cas toujours en transition, en quête d'une hiérarchie établie depuis le retrait soudain de la Belge Justine Henin au printemps. Une preuve? Le simple fait que quatre des dix premières têtes de série de l'US Open ont disparu au bout de trois tours. Côté masculin, les dix premières têtes de série sont encore bien là après cinq jours.

Serena gagne un duel épique

Les soeurs Williams ont livré un combat titanesque, héroïque, épique, en quarts de l'US Open. Ce duel est revenu à Serena, qui a battu Venus en 2 tie-breaks, 8-6 et 9-7.
Alors que le tournoi féminin avait jusqu'alors manqué de relief, faisant pâle figure à côté des rebondissements proposés dans le tableau masculin, la partie entre les "sisters" a été éblouissante, haletante, trépidante. Du grand art, saupoudré de quelques échanges qui resteront dans les annales.

Et alors que le tennis féminin se cherche une no1 mondiale, qui sera désignée à l'issue du tournoi, les Williams, médaillées d'or à Pékin en double, ont montré qu'elles étaient les seules jeunes femmes à pouvoir élever le jeu à un tel niveau d'engagement, de puissance et de spectacle.
10 balles de set sauvés
Celle qui a pris sa revanche après la finale perdue contre son aînée à Wimbledon a arraché ce match en défendant chaque balle comme si sa vie en dépendait. Venus s'est ainsi procurée dix balles de set, deux dans la première manche et huit (!) dans la seconde, sans jamais en concrétiser une. Même dans le jeu décisif du deuxième set, la cadette des Williams s'est battue comme un lionne, au prix de contorsions pas possibles, pour sauver quatre balles qui l'auraient envoyée au troisième set.

"Je ne sais pas pas pourquoi mais les points ne sont pas venus. Serena a bien retourné, intelligemment", a déclaré Venus. "Je n'ai jamais joué une rencontre comme ça dans ma vie. Contre une autre joueuse, j'aurais gagné ce match. Je pensais vraiment que ça irait en trois sets et que j'irai changer ma robe après le deuxième parce que je transpirais tellement", a même raconté la petite soeur.
Les deux meilleures joueuses actuelles
Dans ce fameux deuxième tie-break, Venus a mené 6 points à 3. Serena est remonté à 6/6. Venus s'est de nouveau procurée une balle de set à 7/6. Trois points plus tard, elle avait perdu le match... Et pourtant, quelques minutes auparavant, à 5 jeux à 3 en sa faveur alors qu'elle venait de faire le break, l'aînée a mené 40-0 sur son service. Sans gagner la manche... "Ces points là auraient même dû être des balles de match mais c'est le sport", a soupiré Venus, qui a quand même servi à 201 km/h.

"Venus a fait quelques erreurs qu'elle ne fait pas normalement", a indiqué Serena, qui, interrogée sur le fait de savoir si c'étaient les deux meilleures joueuses du monde qui venaient de s'affronter a répondu "oui" sans complexe. "On a proposé le meilleur jeu jusqu'à présent", a-t-elle dit. "On aurait aimé se rencontrer en finale mais c'est comme ça", a ajouté Venus.
"Je serai no1 mondiale"
Serena mène dé****ais 9 à 8 dans les affrontements familiaux. Mais elle ne place pas cet "US Open 2008" en haut de la liste. "Je le mettrai en no2", juge-t-elle. "Notre finale à l'Open d'Australie en 2003 était plus dure encore".

La cadette est dé****ais en mission, au nom de la famille. Elle veut inscrire ce patronyme pour la cinquième fois sur le trophée new yorkais. Et vise aussi une autre chose. "Tôt ou tard, je serai no1 mondiale", assène-t-elle. C'est peut-être pour samedi. Une victoire lui suffira.

Quatre pour un trône
Jelena Jankovic (WTA 2), Serena Williams (3), Elena Dementieva (6) et Dinara Safina (7), les quatre demi-finalistes de l'US Open vendredi, peuvent devenir no1 mondiale à l'issue du dernier Grand Chelem de la saison. Pour remplacer Ana Ivanovic, voici les scénarios.

Jelena Jankovic:
elle redeviendra no1 si elle remporte le tournoi ou si elle va en finale et que Serena Williams n'y va pas. La Serbe de 23 ans avouait sa fatigue au début du tournoi. Elle est celle qui a le plus "souffert", passant une heure de plus sur le court que Serena Williams, qui a pourtant joué 2h30 contre sa soeur.

Serena Williams:
i elle remporte le tournoi. Sa puissance et son physique sont ses atouts principaux, d'autant qu'elle n'a pas vraiment été poussée dans ses quatre premiers matches jusqu'en quarts.
Elena Dementieva:
elle deviendra no1 si elle remporte le tournoi. La médaillée d'or des JO de Pékin est sur une série de 11 succès consécutifs, contre notamment deux de ses trois rivales pour le titre, Williams (quart de finale JO) et Safina (finale JO).
Dinara Safina:
elle deviendra no1 si elle remporte le tournoi contre une autre joueuse que Jankovic. La Russe s'est hissée en finale de six des sept derniers tournois qu'elle a disputés et ne compte que quatre défaites (en 42 matches) depuis quatre mois.

La WTA, l'organisme qui gère le circuit professionnel féminin de tennis, a levé le voile mercredi sur son calendrier 2009, qui compte moins de tournois et une nouvelle hiérarchie, avec des tournois "Premier", dont quatre seront obligatoires.

La WTA comptera 50 tournois, soit six que moins qu'en 2008, divisés entre deux catégories: "Premier" (20) et "International" (30). Les meilleures joueuses auront donc une saison moins longue de deux semaines.

Quatre "Premier", Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid et Pékin, seront obligatoires pour les meilleures joueuses. Si elle ne veulent ou ne peuvent venir, elles devront se plier à des actions de promotion en remplacement. En cas de refus, elles seront suspendues la saison suivante pour deux tournois "Premier".

Un tiers des tournois WTA seront combinés avec les tournois masculins (ATP), dont les quatre "Premier", dotés chacun de 4,5 millions de dollars, soit la même dotation que pour les hommes.

Le système de classement mondial va également changer avec les 16 meilleurs résultats (les Grands Chelems + les "Premier" obligatoires + les deux autres meilleurs résultats dans les "Premier" + les six autres meilleurs résultats de l'année) au lieu des 17 meilleurs (tous tournois confondus) cette saison.

La semaine dernière, l'ATP avait annoncé son calendrier pour les saisons 2009-2011, dont le principal changement est le passage de Madrid au label "1000" en mai sur terre battue et la rétrogradation de Hambourg (ex Masters series) au rang de "500" en juillet, toujours sur terre battue.

Jelena Jankovic et Serena Williams se sont qualifiées pour la finale de l'US Open en battant respectivement Elena Dementieva (6-4 6-4) et Dinara Safina (6-3 6-2).
La Serbe Jelena Jankovic et l'Américaine Serena Williams attendaient cela depuis longtemps: elles joueront la finale de l'US Open, samedi à New York si la tempête Hanna et son escorte pluvieuse le permettent, avec la place de N.1 mondiale en guise de cerise sur le gâteau. Car en plus d'empocher le titre du dernier tournoi du Grand chelem de la saison, la gagnante deviendra aussi N.1 mondiale.

Ce sera donc quitte ou double à New York: le trophée et le trône mondial pour l'une, la déception et les larmes pour l'autre. En Amérique, on aime rien tant que les "success story". La tempête tropicale Hanna, qui touchait la côte sud-est des Etats-Unis vendredi, pouvait toutefois causer de gros soucis de programmation aux organisateurs, de fortes pluies devant arroser la "Grosse Pomme" samedi.
Une longue attente
Vendredi en demi-finale, la Serbe Jankovic, tête de série N.2, a disposé de la championne olympique de Pékin Elena Dementieva (N.5), 6-4, 6-4, alors que l'Américaine Williams, tête de série N.4, a dominé sans aucun problème une autre Russe, Dinara Safina (N.6) 6-3, 6-2.

Les deux jeunes femmes attendaient cela depuis un bail, chacune avec leurs raisons. Jankovic, 23 ans, disputera en effet la finale d'un tournoi du Grand Chelem pour la première fois de sa carrière, elle qui était devenu N.1 mondiale au cours de l'été sans jamais avoir atteint ce stade, butant souvent en demi-finale (quatre fois depuis deux ans).
Jankovic complète son CV
Une lacune dans son CV que beaucoup ne manquait pas de lui faire remarquer et qu'elle commençait à trouver pesante. "J'en ai les larmes aux yeux, a-t-elle dit sur le court, dans un grand sourire. Enfin ma première finale de Grand Chelem, c'est incroyable."

Pour Serena Williams, 26 ans, l'attente aura été bien longue avant de retrouver la finale de "son" tournoi national. Et l'Amérique se languissait aussi d'y revoir une des siennes. La dernière fois, c'était déjà Serena (et sa soeur aînée Venus). En 2002, date de son deuxième et dernier succès ici. Six ans d'attente pour la cadette des soeurs Williams, à échouer au mieux en quart de finale (2004, 2007).
"Vraiment un bel été"
"C'est fabuleux de revenir enfin en finale à New York. Comme ça, il y aura une Américaine", s'est exclamé la cadette des Williams. "C'est vraiment un bel été pour moi". Ensoleillé par une médaille d'or olympique glanée en double avec Venus et à peine assombri par une défaite en finale de Wimbledon, contre Venus.

Jankovic, libérée des nombreuses blessures qui ont saccadé sa saison, se sent revivre à New York. Mais elle mesure l'étendue de la tâche face une Serena portée par 23.000 spectateurs et décidé à inscrire le nom de la famille Williams une cinquième fois sur le trophée new yorkais.
Serena met la pression
"Serena est la joueuse la plus puissante du circuit avec sa soeur Venus, assure-t-elle. Je ne peux pas rivaliser avec elle dans ce domaine. Alors je dois être à mon top pour tenter de courir derrière toutes les balles. Cela va être difficile mais c'est possible."

L'Américaine voit bien sûr les choses différemment: "Jelena a la pression de devoir gagner son premier tournoi du Grand Chelem, pas moi". Son premier Grand Chelem, Serena l'avait remporté à New York, à 17 ans. Neuf ans plus tard, elle peut cette fois se parer d'une double couronne.

Pour la 3e fois de sa carrière, Serena Williams remporte l'US Open en dominant Jelena Jankovic en finale. L'Américaine de 26 ans retrouve ainsi la place de no1 mondiale.
Six ans après son dernier succès à New York et six ans après être devenue no1 mondiale pour la première fois, Serena Williams a confirmé sa "nouvelle carrière" en remportant son troisième US Open et en enfilant de nouveau les habits de Première dame du tennis. La petite soeur de Venus, âgée de 26 ans, qui n'a pas concédé un seul set du tournoi (comme lors de sa victoire en 2002), est la nouvelle patronne d'un circuit qui en manque désespérément depuis la retraite surprise en mai de Justine Henin, qui avait dominé le classement pendant 117 semaines.

Depuis que le nom de la Belge a disparu, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic et Jelena Jankovic ont occupé "sa" place sans qu'une hiérarchie se dégage. C'est maintenant au tour de Serena Williams, qui a déjà été no1 mondiale pendant 57 semaines entre août 2002 et octobre 2003. "Je ne peux pas croire que je suis de nouveau no1, ça fait tellement longtemps, c'est un peu bizarre", s'est exclamée Serena. "Je ne cherchais pas ça du tout, c'est vraiment du bonus."
Un retour au top éclatant
L'Américaine confirme de façon éclatante son retour au top, entamé en janvier 2007 à Melbourne. Victorieuse de l'Open d'Australie à la surprise générale alors qu'elle était classée 81e mondiale, Serena remportait alors son premier tournoi depuis deux ans, sortant de nulle part et de l'enfer.

Le plus souvent blessée, elle n'avait même plus réussi à atteindre une finale pendant ce laps de temps. La faute à un maudit genou gauche qui l'embêta presque chaque saison de 2003, année où elle perdit sa place de no1 mondiale, à 2006, année où elle toucha le fond (140e mondiale en juillet, son plus mauvais classement depuis 1997). Ces cinq dernières années, Serena Williams n'a ainsi remporté que trois Grands Chelems alors qu'elle en avait enlevé cinq durant les deux exercices précédents (2002 et 2003).
Une joie démonstrative
Opérée du genou, perturbée par un drame familial et distraite par ses aventures extra-sportives (télévision, mode), Serena n'était plus qu'une joueuse de tennis à temps partiel. Dimanche, l'Américaine n'a pas cherché à masquer une joie presque enfantine une fois sa deuxième balle de match convertie en un chèque de 1,5 million de dollars, balançant sa raquette dans le ciel de New York et sautant sur elle-même aussi haut que ses jambes pouvaient la propulser.

Une joie bien plus démonstrative que lors de son premier succès à New York, en 1999, alors qu'elle n'était qu'une gamine de 17 ans. "Cela rattrape un peu ma défaite en finale à Wimbledon (ndlr: contre sa soeur Venus)", a dit la championne olympique de Pékin (avec sa soeur Venus), qui voit dé****ais plus loin: "Après ce neuvième titre en Grand Chelem, je veux atteindre un nombre à deux chiffres, j'ai le jeu pour le faire."
"Je ne vais pas m'arrêter là"
"Je joue toujours bien en Australie, un tournoi qui arrive bientôt, je dois aussi gagner un autre Roland-Garros et j'aime Wimbledon. J'adore gagner des Grands Chelems. Cela ne va pas s'arrêter là." "J'ai l'impression d'entamer une nouvelle carrière, de me sentir jeune et tellement pleine d'énergie", a-t-elle ajouté. "J'ai encore tellement de choses à faire et je sens que je n'ai pas encore joué mon meilleur tennis."

US Open - Les organisateurs assurent qu'un toit va être construit

Les organisateurs de l'US Open de tennis ont affirmé qu'ils étaient plus que jamais décidés à faire construire un toit pour couvrir le court Arthur-Ashe, afin d'éviter à l'avenir tout bouleversement de programme dû aux conditions climatiques.

"Nous estimons que le tournoi a atteint un point de non-retour qui nous oblige sérieusement à installer un toit sur le court Arthur-Ashe", a déclaré samedi le directeur du tournoi, Arlen Kantarian, après que de fortes pluies ont interrompu la demi-finale entre Rafael Nadal et Andy Murray, l'Ecossais menant 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), 2-3.

Il a ajouté qu'une troisième étude avait été menée pour la construction d'un toit, sans préciser son coût ni une éventuelle date.

"Au jour d'aujourd'hui, la question n'est pas de savoir si le projet se fera, mais quand", a néanmoins assuré M. Kantarian, tout en affirmant d'ores et déjà que le toit ne serait pas installé pour l'édition 2009.

La dernière levée du Grand Chelem de la saison est, depuis samedi, très perturbée par de fortes pluies qui s'abattent sur New York, alors que la tempête tropicale Hanna remontait la côte nord-est des Etats-Unis.

Dimanche doit se terminer la deuxième demi-finale messieurs entre Nadal et Murray à partir de 20H00 GMT, suivie à partir de 01H00 GMT de la finale dames entre l'Américaine Serena Williams et la Serbe Jelena Jankovic, initialement prévue samedi.

Roger Federer, premier qualifié pour la finale messieurs, tentera de remporter son 5e US Open consécutif, lundi à partir de 21H00 GMT, face à Murray ou Nadal.

Maria a annoncé aujourd'hui qu'elle lancait un programme de bourse de 210,000 $ pour des étudiants des régions Affectés apar la catastrophe de Tchernobyl en Biélorussie.
Le programme est une initiative commune entre la fondation de Maria Sharapova et le Programme de Développement de Nations unies (UNDP), où elle sert d'ambassadrice de bonne volonté.
Les bourses permettront à 12 jeunes doués de la régions de suivre le programme complet d'une des deux universités principales de bielorussie

La fondation MS a déjà donnée 100,000 $ aux projets orientés pour des jeunes Biélorusses de Russie et d'Ukraine affectée par l'accident nucléraire de Tchernobyl en 1986.

Maria sharapova était attendue en personne en Biélorussie ce mois ci pour lancer le programme, mais elle a été forcé de reporter sa visite suite au traitement médical qu'elle doit suivre pour soigner la blessure à l'épaule qui l'avait contraint à renoncer aux JO et à l'US open . Sa visite est maintenant reportée en 2009.

"Ca a toujours été mon rêve de contribuer au rétablissement d'une région en biélorussie à cause de mes origines" annonca Maria, qui a toujours de la famille à Gomel en Biélorussie.
"L'acés aux études supérieurs pour les plus méritant fait partie d'un effort plus large pour construire un avenir plus brillant pour la région. "

"UNDP est honoré de compter Maria Sharapova parmi ses Ambassadeurs de bonne volonté," a fait remarquer Kemal Dervis, UNDP l'Administrator.
"Son engagement aide à transmettre un message d'espour aux jeunes dans 'lune des région les plus ruiné du monde, un retour à une vie normale est maintenant réaliste."
cette bourse aidera 12 étudiant inscrit aux beaux arts de l'université de bielorussie. Le programme espère aider au mérites des jeunes qui n'aurait pas les moyens de poursuivre leurs études supérieurs.
La fondation Maria sharapova choisira les gagnants de la bourse sur une liste de candidats préselectionné préparé par les universités en collaboration avec le PNUD et le ministère responsable des programme d'aides suite à la catastrophe de tchernobyl.
On attribuera à trois nouveaux étudiants des bourses chaque année pour une durée de 4 ans.
C'est la premiere fois qu' une organisation non gouvernementale internationale fournit son appui à ce type de projet en biélorussie. Les premiers lauréats de cette bourse débuteront leurs études en septembre 2009.

If it weren't for the amazing writers in the New Yorker, or Chelsea Handlers humor I would be losing my mind by now. Just put me in a suit and I easily fit in to the everyday 9 to 5 workday hours, weekends off sort of deal. I've been progressing really well but its taking a lot longer than I had selfishly planned. Therefore my team and I decided to 'shut it down' for the season. The clinic and team in Phoenix has been incredibly nice and supportive. ( Although they truly believe I have a phone and text addiction) The atmosphere is very united...most of the athletes here have similiar shoulder problems so we can all relate to each other even though most of them are 6'4 heavyweight muscular pitchers or quarterbacks (and I guess they're pretty darn good but since I never finished that Football For Dummies book, and the only football games I ever watch is when I mistakengly turn on a sports channel, I am so clueless to who they are and what exactly they do.) Every other day we do agility workouts and footwork drills so its nice to have company for a change. To be quite honest this whole experience has been quite the change to my usual yearly pace. On the weekends I have been able to go home and have a normal quiet life...which is so unusual because my days off during the year are so random. Next week I am going to finally hit my first tennis ball and a few weeks after that my first serves.

I'm sure you have heard about my new partnership with Cole Haan that I'm so very excited about. I had my design meeting in NY and I was more nervous presenting my ideas than I was before a GS final. Its a bit awkward coming into a room full of designers that do it for a living...put in the fact that I'm 21 and it makes it that much more awkward.

All in all its a really big step design wise for me and I can't wait till next fall when it comes out...its full of everyday-life shoulder bags, flats, comfy boots, casual sneakers and of course a few pairs of killer heels.

Speaking of fall, I'm very ready for a few chilly evenings after being in the Phoenix heat for the last 6 weeks. You find yourself sweating profusely just getting in and out of the car. And they have these sprinklers coming out of the ceiling which I think are really unnecessary and only make the heat humid.

Not to be mean or anything but because I've been taking more runs on the beach I have been blown away by the amount of people that walk around with that E.T looking stick, trying to find coins or whatever else they believe they might find in the sand. Let's be honest here...unless you're at Club 55 in St.Tropez, who in their right mind is going to be bringing expensive jewelry or lots of coins to the beach? Waste of time if you ask me. Not sure how much that stick costs but I'm assuming it would take a while before you're making any sort of profit.

Even though Michael has been out of commission for the last few weeks because of a blood clot in his calf which lead him to staying in the hospital for a few days(don't ask), he's still able to get the quote. Everyone at the clinic were giving him a hard time for not doing the exercises with me to which he said 'This is the exact reason I retired...so I don't have to do this stuff anymore'.

Just a note on hospitals while we're at it...they are exhausting! Within the 30 minutes I was there visiting, about 5 different people walked in and out of his room checking charts, asking questions, making small talk. I'm all for tender-loving-care but if you're not coming in to give the person medicine and making him feel better, why bother? After all, the nurse call button is right next to his thumb if he needs any help.

Fashion week was great fun...Peter Som had one of his best collections yet! There is this one long blue dress that I cannot wait to wear! And I was so thrilled to see so many of the designers at my Vogue/Cole Haan event.

While in NY I also did a couple really cool photo shoots which will be coming out later in the year...those are always fun because I feel like I get to play a different character on each one of them...and I never get the chance to do them either so that was a change.

Maria Sharapova is a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour player, currently ranked 6th. The tennis phenom was born in the Soviet Union and resides in Bradenton, Florida. She is dating Charlie Ebersol, son of NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol and Hollywood actress Susan Saint James.

The budding romance between the 21 year old Sharapova and 25 year old Ebersol has reportedly pleased his famous parents. The Ebersol family suffered great tragedy in 2004 when Charlie and his father were in a plane crash. Charlie’s younger brother Teddy, 14, died at the scene in Montrose County, Colorado. The Teddy Ebersol Red Sox Fields at Lederman Park in Boston was built in memoriam to the young man.

Sharapova has won three Grand Slam singles titles including the 2008 Australian Open. She is coached by her father Yuri Sharapov and former player Michael Joyce.

La Russe Maria Sharapova, mise sur la touche depuis de nombreuses semaines suite à une sérieuse blessure à l'épaule droite, annonce sur son site qu'elle fera son retour à la compétition lors du World Team Challenge de Hong Kong (7-10 janvier). Elle lancera ainsi sa saison 2009 lors de cette compétition par équipes de trois où elle mènera la charge pour la Russie.

La Serbe Jelena Jankovic, l'Américaine Venus Williams ou encore l'Indienne Sania Mirza sont également annoncées. Victorieuse cette saison de l'Open d'Australie, du tournoi de Doha et de celui d'Amelia Island, Sharapova, ancienne n°1 mondiale, se débat depuis maintenant deux saisons avec des problèmes récurrents à l'épaule.
